Stop contact
Do not send more money, codes, documents, or personal information. You do not need to keep replying.
Contact your bank
If money or banking information was shared, call your bank or card provider using the number on the back of your card.
Change passwords
If an account may be affected, change the password. Use a different password for each important account.
Save evidence
Keep emails, texts, phone numbers, receipts, screenshots, and notes about what happened.
Report it
Contact local police. Also report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone or through its official website.
If money or information was shared
Act fast, then write things down.
- Call your bank or credit-card company.
- Ask whether accounts, cards, or transfers can be frozen or reviewed.
- Change passwords for affected accounts.
- Turn on two-step verification where possible.
- Report to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
- Write a short timeline while the details are fresh.
